Resources Coaching Resources EXECUTIVE COACH & FACILITATOR, TRISH MEECHAM, RECOMMENDS 5 KEY STRATEGIES FOR ATTAINING WORK-LIFE BALANCE For all of us as working professionals, the expectations and demands for high performance continue to grow. Be smart - know your limits & avoid getting caught up in the work-life balance trap. Taking note of these simple steps, will help you in moving towards a healthier, more balanced and fulfilling life. 1. BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOURSELF - Be proactive in asking for support & delegate tasks that you don't need to take on yourself. Take regular holidays, or a rare 'mental health' day if you need to reduce stress. Coach other people to respect you & your time. 2. SCHEDULE BLOCKS OF TIME - Schedule your time efficiently in and out of work. Block out your most energetic times of the day for high demand tasks; make time for lower priority activities & admin e.g. catching up on mail. Create time for you & your personal wellbeing - e.g. going to the gym, attending personal interest classes or a movie. Importantly, schedule time for family & friends. 3. SAY NO TO DISTRACTIONS - Stay focused while in the office, and budget your time effectively. Take personal calls during your breaks. Answer low priority or personal mails at the end of the day. Block time without meetings so you can focus on your tasks with little interruption. Be confident in telling colleagues that you'd love to chat, but you're busy. Catch up with them over lunch instead! 4. LEAVE THE OFFICE ON TIME 2-3 DAYS A WEEK - Let go of needing to be seen in the office till all hours. Get a life -if you're efficient & productive, there's every reason to maintain & enhance your ability to perform. Your employer will thank you for it! Leave the office to participate in something that will positively impact your health & wellbeing. There are times when working late is necessary, however aim to leave on time at least 2-3 days a week. 5. MAXIMIZE WEEKENDS & HOLIDAYS - Make the most of your time off. Arrange activities with family & friends, a weekend trip away, a holiday, or some enjoyable leisure activity. Plan ahead for these times, relax & enjoy them. Leave work where it belongs!
