Message from the President

 

Dear HKICC Friends,

This is my last message as President of the HKICC. On April 23, 2009 our members are invited to elect my successor who will start her/his term on May 01, 2009. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all who have supported HKICC and me during the past two years. I really appreciate that a number of members invested their time and energy to help HKICC develop further.

Please feel free to nominate any members or yourself (if you're a member) for any of the management committee positions. We'd like to see 'new' people joining and injecting a new perspective into our association.

The focus of today's newsletter is on goals and I'd like to share with you a new perspective on goal setting.

    Human beings are goal-seeking creatures. We are impatient and try, and fall, and try again until we learn to walk. We babble and coo and struggle until we learn to talk. Skinned knees mean nothing in the quest to ride a bicycle. Recently, the world has watched Olympic athletes over-come incredible obstacles in the quest for a medal. When a client tells me they have had a goal, but in the past 6 months they have made little or no progress towards achieving it, I encourage them to ask themselves the following 10 questions:

    I encourage you to pick up a pen and a piece of paper and jot down the goals you want to reach. Look at each goal and evaluate it. Make any changes necessary to ensure it meets the criteria for a SMART goals:

    S = Specific
    M = Measurable
    A = Attainable
    R = Realistic
    T = Timely

    Specific

    Goals should be straightforward and emphasize what you want to happen. Specifics help us to focus our efforts and clearly define what we are going to do.

    Specific is the What, Why, and How of the SMART model.

    Goal Setting Theory - Don't Ask How: Michael A Jones

    Is a goal setting theory that is easy to comprehend and employ and which produces spectacular results just an elusive dream? Thankfully no. Although we may be forgiven for thinking so in view of the wealth of information available on goal setting, some of which makes it appear unnecessarily complicated. Perhaps that explains why many who set goals also fail to get results as they drop by the wayside.

    Here are two goal setting theory approaches. You can pick the best out of each or use the approach that suits your personality and style. They can be summarized as follows:
