Message from the President

Dear HKICC Friends,
In the past couple of months several people have asked me if it still makes sense to become a coach in Hong Kong as it seems that the number of coaches here has grown rapidly over the past years.
Indeed, taking the number of professional coaches who are members of the HKICC as an indicator, the number grew from less than 20 in 2003 to close to 100 today. We estimate the total number of professionally trained coaches in Hong Kong to be around 120-140.
So do we have already too many coaches in Hong Kong?

| The Measurement of Creativity |

Article by: Ian Rose
Adapted by Carole Lewis from: http://www.creativityatwork.com/Newsletters/Aug-Sep05RoseROI.html
There has been a lot of debate in recent years about measuring the ROI of creativity in business. Ian Rose weighs in:
Organizations have not measured creativity for two reasons. First, because of the perceived amount of effort it would take to develop a measurement system and maintain it over time. Second, in most cases, no one in senior management ever asks for this "evidence of effectiveness." Therefore, if the key players are not asking: "Why aren't you measuring?", why then should precious resources be allocated to what is essentially a non-issue?
This is just as well. Many managers are not equipped to recognize creativity when they see it, let alone measure it. They are paid to get the problem solved; the focus is on the result, not on how the result was achieved. There is often little time to think back after the project, to determine what was done to achieve the result, and what else could have been done to do it better. Instead, it is off again to the next problem.

What led you into coaching?

When I came across the coaching approach I was attracted by the focus on developing the strengths of an individual rather than remedying weaknesses and starting in the present.

Dear Readers,
It's summertime when traditionally many of us think about taking a break and creating time for fun and play.
Why restrict it to summer? What would your life look like if you created time for more fun and play every day? What would your experience of work be like if you had more fun doing your job? What would your relationships look like if you injected more fun and laughter? How can you tap into that part of you which is alive, energetic, creative and playful? We have a right as human beings to be playful and frivolous!

For Book Lovers
Angela Spaxman's favorite books on coaching and leadership:
Measuring Hidden Dimensions by Otto Laske. This book provides a convincing case for why personal development is crucial for coaches, and lack of awareness or immaturity could be unethical for coaches. It also describes a framework for assessing your own and your coachee's level of development.
Leadership Without Easy Answers by Ronald Heifitz. A very inspiring read in terms of what leaders do to move whole societies. There are lots of examples from American politics to explain what it takes to influence change in deeply embedded societal issues.
Synchronicity, the Inner Path of Leadership by Joseph Jaworski. This book is very personal and at times moving. It touches on what truly defines great leaders, far beyond just management skills. It should be required reading for anyone who wants to make a real difference with their leadership.
Entangled Minds by Dean Radin. If you're curious about the true power of intuition and intention, this book provides a thorough analysis of the current scientific knowledge on paranormal mind-mind and mind-matter connections. It makes a strong case that "there's something strange going on" and that followers of science must take the lead from quantum physics and drop the classical view of how the world works.
