What led you into coaching?
I started coaching simply because I saw a need. As a full time HR manager, I saw the need of the staff to develop successful home relationships in order to thrive in their work environment. As a volunteer counselor and mentor to young people, I saw the need for teenagers to have healthy role models who could guide them to develop values for their life, increase their confidence and esteem, and help them make healthy decisions whilst transitioning from child to teen and into the adult world.

What I wanted to do didn’t exist in a traditional job.  So with the need I saw and the passions and dreams that I had, I started Teen Success. I studied coaching through CoachU and the Parent as Coach Academy and Counseling through the Australian Institute of Professional Counselors.

Who do you typically coach?
I coach people who are willing to be challenged and ready to commit to stepping up to live the life they talk about but often don’t follow up on.

Most of my one-on-one clientele are women and teenagers. Most of my group sessions consist of mothers and fathers wanting to learn how to be a coach to their pre teen or teenager.

The women I coach normally have a sense that they are born for more than what they are doing but just often don’t know what it is or how to get there.

The Teens I coach are just going through the rollercoaster journey of learning to be adults, deal with academic pressure, friendship issues and parental control.

What makes you unique as a coach?
I think my uniqueness comes from my belief that it’s the client who is the ‘star’ not the coach. I really believe in my clients’ potential, I hold them to their dreams, I am truly excited when they achieve what they set out to do, and I don’t give up when it gets hard.

I always treat my clients as individuals and tailor coaching programs accordingly.

Most of all, I have fun.

Are there special issues that crop up in your clients’ lives at this holiday time of year? If so, how do you typically coach them around it?
This time of year to me is the “Live By Example Month’ – Christmas and New Year brings a lot of joy, but also some emptiness that is often filled by partying and drinking. This goes for both adults and teens.

For parents – especially mothers, normally this time of year brings up a lot of issues and concerns around freedoms and boundaries for their teenagers, so we look at implementing family agreements and accountability processes within the family.  I encourage parents to live by example during this time.

For teenagers, the issues are varied; some are really concerned about relationships, partying and curfew time, and self control with alcohol; for others, it’s deciding if they should defer university / college or go to boarding school. This is a time when I support teenagers to uncover their true self and help them set standards and boundaries for their holiday season.

What do you do for fun and relaxation?
For fun, I coach! I am energized by coaching and speaking at events. My love language is quality time, so I love spending time with my family, my husband and my 14-month-old son, Caleb – he has such a funny personality. My friends are also very important to me and I enjoy discussing life over great coffee.

I relax when I cook, normally something with chocolate in it, I hike and holiday and love to surf.  I also relax to music and spend time in prayer.

Do you have a favorite tool?
There are so many tools that I use! My main tools are normally ones that I have developed myself using cognitive development techniques and behavioral management. These once again are tailor-made depending on who I am working with.

One of my main tools for teenagers is what I call “My Gremlin”, which looks at their thoughts and changing certain patterns of thinking. I often use MBTI, the Enneagram, and the 5 Love Languages as well.

For parents I often use accountability triangles and agreements and family genograms to look at certain family characteristics.
