Message from the President

Dear HKICC Friends,

Last Saturday I had an interesting conversation with a new member of HKICC, someone who actually lives in Europe but loves coming to Hong Kong and is about to set up a client base here also.

He shared two experiences that puzzled me a bit.

First, he told me that he attended a few networking events here in Hong Kong and - following local practice - handed out his name card, which states a title of "Business Coach". On several occasions, after seeing his title, people started acting as if they were uncomfortable continuing in conversation with him - almost like he had an infectious disease that they had just noticed.

  • HKICC STRATEGY Project: Status Report

    By Charlie Lang

In the August Newsletter I informed you about the strategy workshop conducted by Douglas Gerber in early August 2007.

In the meantime, several workgroups have started working on the identified strategic options to make our vision of 1,000 members by end of 2009 a reality. One of the keys to that achievement will be a more segmented membership with specific - and expanded - membership benefits.

TOP 10 Tips for Giving Feedback

Article adapted by Carole Lewis for HKICC from: http://www.thiagi.com/email-coach101-tips.html

    1. Begin your feedback session by asking, 'What did you do today that makes you feel positive and proud?' The coachee is likely to be her or his worst critic.
    2. Catch the coachee doing something right.
    3. Use the coachee's self-evaluation to begin the process of setting goals for the coaching process.
    4. Offer praise if a coachee's self-evaluation does not identify areas that have improved, or strengths on which to build.
    5. Gently explore alternatives whenever a coachee claims that his or her failure was due to bad luck. Through appropriate questions, help to show the coachee that the failure was likely due to a lack of effort or the choice of an ineffective strategy.

Being Purpose-Full: Working with Life Purpose

Highlights from Part 2 of this extended article adaptation include examples of how the use of life purpose work helped two coaching clients, and a list of additional resources on discovering one's life purpose. The article appears here with the kind permission of Dr. Patrick Williams, Founder and CEO, Institute for Life Coach Training http://www.lifecoachtraining.com/index.shtml

A favorite quote about the power of life purpose comes from a well-known U.S. president, Woodrow Wilson, who said: "You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand." Wilson's quote reinforces the value of life purpose work: When our purpose, our power, and our passion intersect, we find personal fulfillment and enrich the world. As you work with clients on life purpose, you'll find that sometimes they confuse life purpose, vision, and mission.

Coaching vs. Therapy: Similarities and Differences

Adapted by Carole Lewis from an article by Peter Bluckert at http://www.pbcoaching.com/article-coaching-and-therapy.php

Given that coaching and mentoring1 are still in their early stages of development as professions, it is hardly surprising that there is a lack of clarity and agreement around definitions, approaches, core competencies and several key issues. One of those issues is the difference between coaching and therapy,2 and it is a subject often discussed by coaches in training and by more experienced practitioners. It is one of those thorny topics that defies simple, reductionist thinking. Nor does it fit neatly into 2 x 2 box system models or bullet point lists.

    What led you to coaching?
You may say I was "led into" it by the part of me that knows what I am here for. My first 13 years of career life was spent in the fashion industry, in which I enjoyed the creativity but knew that was not what I would do for the rest of my life. I had never heard about coaching then. But I was already interested in health and personal development. Growing up I knew that people liked talking to me because I could uplift them. I actually set the intention to "come back in my next life" relieving suffering by educating and healing people.
