Message from the President

As I’ve pointed out in the last newsletter, I’d like to focus this message on HKICC’s survey, which we did last month. We sent out about 470 requests and received 105 responses. Without interpreting them, here are the responses.

The survey posed 12 questions:

1) Primary job nature - 25 % said they are coaches, 14% in human resources, 12% trainers, 9% management.

2) Gender among coaches – 67% and 33% split between female and male.

3) Where coaches come from- 65% coaches are based in Hong Kong, 9.5% in the UK, 6% in Asia and 5% in North America and 5% in Europe.

4) Age group among coaches – 43% aged between 40 to 49, 26% between 50 to 59 and 23% between 30 to 39.

5) Reasons behind joining/subscribing to HKICC - 65% because “sharing of best practices, 61% professional development, 56% network opportunity, 42% sense of community, 22% professional credibility, and 19% leadership development.

  • Top Ten things to know about asking for referrals

    Adapted from http://www.topten.org/public/AG/AG355.html

    1. Ask people outright. Explain what you do and say you’d like referrals.
    2.  Build your reputation so that asking for referrals is easy.
    3. Create an atmosphere where referrals can occur. People refer people to people they like and trust.
    4. Remember that you get clients by being calm and relaxed – not by sounding desperate.
    5. Consider what referring ‘you’ means to others.  Let them know if they will get something out of it.
    6. Consider what people referring you could get?  A great referral can lead to credibility and stronger relationships.
    7. Be positive and keep up with the loop of referrals in your community.
    8. Give referrals to get referrals,
    9. Remember to show your appreciation to people who refer others to you.
    10. Maintain relationships with people who refer others to you.

Committee Member Profile – Mau Chi-wang

    Vice-President ( Membership)
Managing Director, Paradigm Shift Consultancy, specialized in political communications and executive coaching/training.

What moved you to give your time so generously to make a contribution to HKICC?
Basically, a few years ago, when I joined HKICC as a member and tried to learn something from this community, I found the workshops and some of the programs very inspiring and intellectually well grounded. Besides, this community is very beautiful and full of “diversity” and everyone here is very unique. I do want to contribute myself towards the further success of HKICC and that is why I became the VP (Membership) last April.

What do you most like about the community? What do you least like about it?
I like the warmth, uniqueness of different members, the diversity of our group and seeing changes in some members when they become involved more in coaching, personal & corporate growth of our community.

    Member Profile – Carole Lewis

    Life coach
    Corporate coach

    How did hear about us?
I heard about the HKICC through another coach, when I first began to get interested in coaching.

What made you join as a member?
I attended a few meetings, which I very much enjoyed and decided that I wanted to be part of the coaching community in Hong Kong.

What is one quality which you think is essential to have as a Coach?
The ability to be able to give 100% attention to your client without letting other distractions get in the way.

    How would you describe coaching?
I like the explanation I was given when I went through my coach training; Coaching is a synthesis of elements from business, personal development and sports.  Having a coach is like having a mentor to believe in you, a manager to keep you on track, a personal trainer to keep you motivated and a sports coach to give you objective input from the outside.

    FEATURE: The Power of Vision

    Adapted from: http://www.solutionbox.com/news/c22-vision.asp

If we really want to create something new in life, it simply makes sense to work out what that is, and then create a structure to constantly remind yourself. To keep it real. To keep you inspired, motivated. The author of this article shares a story from a client of his which suggests how to do just that. Here is his story.. 'EACH DAY DREAM A LITTLE DREAM.. ..even if it is only in your head it will soon be in your life. A while back I was focused on all that was lacking in my life. My focus each morning as I woke seemed to gravitate to all I didn't have and all I didn't want to have happen. I struggled and struggled until one day it hit me. I was separated from what I truly desired in life in fact I didn't even know what I wanted I had no vision - nothing to desire.

Develop Organizational Potential through Executive Coaching
An afternoon of expertise and interaction for senior executives and HR professionals
    March 27, 2007 2-6pm

This is a ½ day conference organized by our newly formed Executive Coaching Committee. Please join us in promoting this conference, the first of its kind to be presented by the HKICC.

The Executive Coaching Committee was created in September 2006 to promote executive coaching and increase awareness and usage in the Hong Kong business community. It is made up of independent coaches of various nationalities and scope of expertise who share a passion for spreading the word, and take an active role in our business coaching community.

The conference itself will be a rich and lively event combining a talk by the well known Australian writer and coach Alan Sieler from the Newfield Network, two panel discussions by leaders and sponsors of coaching in corporations, a facilitated conversation and dialogue among participants.

We count on your support on this first conference to make it a real success.
