Message from the President

Dear HKICC Friends,

I have almost completed reading the book “What got you here, won’t get you there”, authored by the eminent executive coach Marshall Goldsmith.

Marshall shares many interesting aspects in this book but one observation left a deep impression on me:

“As you go through life, contemplating the mechanics of success and wondering why some people are successful and others are not, you’ll find that this is one of the defining traits of habitual winners: They stack the deck in their favor. And they’re usually unabashed about it.”

  • TOP 10 Reasons to work with an E-Coach

    By Carole Lewis

    1. An E-Coach provides guidance.
    2. An E-Coach provides direction and motivation and focus.
    3. An E-Coach provides focus, resources, tips and advice.
    4. The client can work at their own pace - no appointments and no deadlines.
    5. The client can think things through and take action at their own leisure.

    E-coaching: how it works

Adapted by Carole Lewis from an article by Keith Dixon of Academee Learning Solutions

    Let's begin with a definition of e-coaching:
A two-way communication between a Coach and Coachee that is enabled through the use of technology, whether it be email, telephone, online chat or bulletin board.

    This is clumsy, but accurate.

With the rise of e-learning, e-coaching has become a popular way of replicating the relationship between trainer and student. Recognizing that despite the many advantages of e-learning, people still need the human touch in some form, e-learning providers have worked hard to connect people with each other.

So what are the issues involved in e-coaching? What are the benefits and difficulties of e-coaching, and what are the skills needed to provide a good e-coaching service?

As a finance professional, what led you to coaching?
I’ve ignited my interest in coaching since I realized two facts. First, many people (including me) have suffered from their blind spots in the processes of financial planning and investing. Coaching can help them improve financial performance by defogging. Second, financial abundance is not completing one’s life wheel. Coaching can help people integrate the pursuit of financial goals with other vital aspects of life.

Tell us something unique about your coaching style.
I adopt the “back-to-the-basics” style of coaching, i.e. focusing on questioning and listening. I like to imagine coaching as a process where a coach assists a client in browsing his/her “intranet” (human brain), spotting the “hyperlink” (the client’s real problem) and exploring the feasible solutions. Even as a finance professional, I won’t give any financial advice during the coaching conversation but let the clients dig out the financial wisdom by themselves.

    DISCOVER THE MAGIC OF EGYPT!

Some years ago, I was finally on my first trip to Egypt, this land of mysteries and pharaohs and, of course, the great pyramids. It was a special gift to myself to have subscribed to this trip and, as I was to see, an experience that was to change my life and the course of it. Indeed, 6 months later I was no longer running the successful business I had been involved in for 15 years. Instead, I was starting to set the milestones to organize and facilitate journeys through this magical land and eventually also to other destinations, with strong energy vortices and pull, with an aim to share the wonderful experience and to facilitate growth and consciousness.

This journey is indeed a trip through Egypt...

    OUR FANTASTIC SPONSORS

    Hello Coaches!

Hot (and humid) on the heels of the 10th Anniversary of Hong Kong’s Handover to China, I’m writing from unseasonably crisp and cool New York City where I’ll celebrate my home country’s 4th of July holiday. I was a little worried that my host’s broadband connection might be incompatible with my laptop, but quickly realized I could just mooch off of any number of neighbors’ wireless services.

Are you like me, late to pick up on trends, or do you already have your own coaching blog? Over the next couple of months I plan to feature alternative forms of coaching delivery. This month, Carole Lewis starts off the series with electronic coaching.

Do you offer a trendsetting coaching approach? Please share your story with our readership!

    Stay cool,

    Michelle Gabbe
