Message from the President

Please accept my best wishes for the New Year. This is a season when many of us take stock of our past, while we also plan for the future. Like each of us, HKICC is constantly assessing its purpose while moving forward. One area we agreed in recent committee meetings is to conduct a survey among 600 members and subscribers and find out what we can do to better serve as a Community. I hope you will join me in the upcoming survey to tell us what is important to you as a coach or someone interested in coaching. The survey will be sent out in mid January. I guarantee it will take less than 10 minutes to complete. Your input is important for HKICC.

  • Top 10 Ways to Help Your Coaching Clients

    By Angela Spaxman

    1. Listen fully and reflect on what you hear so that your clients have much more clarity about where they are and where they want to be.
    2. Ask powerful questions to uncover the aspects of an issue that they haven't considered before.
    3. Share your intuitions and experience to give your clients more insight and more choices.
    4. Focus your clients on the bigger picture or on the details, depending on what they need or what they have overlooked.
    5. Emphasize the positive so that they see more of what is possible and take more action.

Committee Member Profile – David Mooijaart

    VP Executive Coaching

What moved you to give your time so generously to make a contribution to HKICC?
It sounded smart to join forces with other coaches and create some instruments from which each of us can benefit. We have created a first version of an “Executive Coaches Directory” and are working on an executive coaching event first half of 2007.

What do you most like about the community? What do you least like about it?
I like the atmosphere, I learn a lot from those I have met until now. The least I like is the slow pace at times, but that could have to do with my personal lifelong struggle: impatienceJ.

What is your definition of coaching?
Serving another human by being with them.

Cultivating a Coaching Culture – How to do it?

By Charlie Lang, Progress-U Ltd., published in Human Resources, 12.2006

“Coaching” has become a buzzword in the past few  years. Consequently, an increasing number of HR professionals think about how to harness the benefits of coaching for their respective organizations. Let’s look at what coaching actually is, what the benefits of developing a coaching culture are, and how it can be done.

    Coaching

According to Merriam-Webster the word “coach” derives from the German word “Kutsche” which is “a large usually closed four-wheeled carriage having doors in the sides and generally a front and a back seat inside and an elevated seat in front for the driver.”

    The 2006 HKICC Christmas Party

    By Lorraine Lee

The HKICC held its annual Christmas Party in mid December and some 30 members and friends of the community gathered at The Viceroy restaurant in Hong Kong and enjoyed an evening of yummy Indian cuisine.

Despite rainy weather outside, our atmosphere of conversations and laughter were relaxed, warm and friendly. Supporting the party's theme of international cultural costume, some members were beautifully attired: President SK Shum together with first lady Galia looked spectacular in their Chinese emperor & empress matched costumes, Florence Lau wore an 'ao dais' an elegant ladies' Vietnamese national dress, Angela Spaxman was in a smart casual Canadian style outfit....just to name a few.

Highlights (and there were a few!) of the evening included.
