Message from the President

Firstly I would like to say thanks to those who have completed the survey about our desire as HKICC committee members to improve services for members. We sent our survey late last month and responses have been tremendous. I enjoyed reading many commentaries that we usually wouldn’t hear about within a regular same group of people. Through the survey, we can reach out to members who are normally far too busy but are willing to put forward great ideas and personally I would like to implement many of them.

As I have mentioned in previous newsletters, we constantly need members to help out if they can spare free time. The Community has grown to the point where there are certain areas where we feel a bottleneck such as editorial, marketing, forum, and professional development.

  • What made me trek Everest! My Top 7 Observations

    By SK Shum

Anyone who knew me 6 years ago; I was an over-weight middle aged guy with good prospects of becoming the next heart attack victim. I weighed 190 lbs with moderate height. By Chinese standard, it was too heavy and risk of dying was high. I was depressed with my career at its plateau and had nothing much to go for. I was a classic example of a man who kept things to himself and a sample pressure cooking-pot in the making.

I didn’t turn to any religion at that time but instead drank heavily. Naturally, that got me nowhere either. I felt more depressed not knowing what to do the next 40 years judging from the average life expectancy of a Chinese man. I was too tired to do any physical sports but kept to drinking, eating and sleeping. These were the order of the day. One day I bumped into an old friend of mine from my banking days.

    How would you describe coaching?
I like the Chinese medicine metaphor. Chinese medicine puts emphasis on:

    - treating both symptoms and the root cause
    - strengthening the person’s immune system
    - proactive measures rather than the reactive ones
    - looking at the total system (holistic) rather than individual organs

    OUR WONDERFUL SPONSORS

    Dear Friends,

It’s the month of February and there is Valentine's Day, this means time to celebrate love. In the Chinese calendar, this month also brings in the Lunar New Year which means time to celebrate all the good things.  I see celebrations as personal because how we decide to treat these events is affected by our emotions. When we feel happy and content, we celebrate more wholeheartedly and our world is bright and hopeful.  On the other hand, when we feel sad and depressed, our view of the world is gloomy and hopeless.   To feel happy and loved, I think we need to love ourselves first.
