Message
from the
President

Dear Readers,
As you can see from this newsletter, HKICC
is not making a summer break this year. Quite
the opposite is the case. In fact, on August
1, 2007 a number of dedicated members got
together to develop a strategy for our
association to make our vision, 1,000 members
(we are currently at over 110 members) and
1,000,000 HKD annual budget (currently approx
100,000 HKD p.a.) by the end of 2009 a
reality.
As a short reminder, we don’t have
this vision just for the sake of becoming
bigger, but because we believe that HKICC
requires a considerably larger membership and
more resources to afford a more professional
organization and to be able to support its
members in a more effective way.
The session was facilitated by strategy
expert and HKICC member Douglas Gerber. From
the enthusiasm of the participants at the end
of the session I can tell that we came up
with some exciting strategic options.

| Group Coaching - Tips, Questions and Definitions |
 |
|
Adapted by Carole Lewis from
http://www.coaching-life.co.uk/articles/group-lifecoaching.html
Group Life Coaching
Ask people about the dynamics of life
coaching and the likely response is that it
is a one-to-one activity performed between an
individual wishing to address an issue and a
coach, either in person or over the
telephone. The model is established and it
works for most personal issues where the
individual alone can make a change.
Group life coaching, however, is growing
rapidly in popularity, particularly within
the business community. Many performance
issues within teams emanate from a
fundamental disconnect with either the team
or the perceptions of groups of individuals
within it.

| Coaching From the Inside Out: The Power of Purpose |
 |
|
Part 1 of this 2-part extended article
adaptation on how life-coaching clients
create and sustain long-term fulfillment by
discovering life purpose appears with the
kind permission of Dr. Patrick Williams,
Founder and CEO, Institute for Life Coach
Training http://www.lifecoachtraining.com/index.shtml
Since we started using the phrase
“Inside Out,” it has become much
more common in the personal and professional
development arena. But the concept remains
valid, if not unique. This work in the human
arena demands that the coach have experience
in learning, growing, and living from the Inside Out. As a rule, people are
taught instead to live from the Outside
In. They are not taught how to
examine their own lives through the lens of
fulfillment.
Growing up, we’re taught how to fit
in, be a good boy or girl, fulfill our
parents’ expectations, and make choices
that create the fewest waves. In our
twenties, we get busy building a career, and
sometimes those choices, too, are made to
fulfill other people’s purpose for us
rather than our purpose for ourselves. In
our thirties, most of us continue in career
building and often in family building, and
we’re often too busy with both of
these to take time to ask, “Am I
fulfilled? Am I on the right
path?”

What led you to
coaching?
It feels as if I came to coaching entirely
by accident, but actually it’s part of
a lifelong pattern of helping and teaching
others with a self-empowering style.
I’d been interested in psychology and
counseling for some years, but given the
years of study required to get certified it
stayed a distant dream, and instead I was
getting on with my career as it was. When
suddenly one day people started asking me to
‘coach’ them – a word I was
only vaguely familiar with at the time
– I began to quickly seek out skills to
equip me to support them.
Who do you coach?
I use coaching skills in pretty much all I do
– in management and in business
development especially, and even with my kids
at home – but I only take on retained
coaching clients when they take the
initiative. Typically my paying clients are
senior executives and business leaders, who
want to improve their business results or
want to transform their quality of life by
changing their occupation.

Dear Readers,
The importance of work-life balance is
central to many a coachee’s progress,
and has recently been on the minds of the
HKICC management committee. Are we, as an
organization, balanced in our support of
those members working in the personal
coaching and corporate coaching fields? If
not, how can we make it so?
Personal development is one area that we
intend to expand upon in this newsletter,
with HKICC Executive VP Anita Moorjani
initiating an effort to supply regular
feature articles. Please consider making a
contribution of your own! And be sure to look
for the ‘Signposts’ column in the
South China Morning Post, where our own
coach-members’ articles on topics
spanning procrastination to enlightenment
appear every Saturday.
To your development,
Michelle Gabbe
Editor,
HKICC
