  • A 70 year old principle of coaching

    by Charlie Lang

As an executive coach I consider it very important to continuously learn more about the various fields that are related to my work. One of these areas is certainly psychology. Though I'm not aiming to become a therapist for CEO's, I enjoy reading psychology related literature.

Recently I finished reading "Modern Man in Search of a Soul" by the great Carl Gustav Jung, the father of Analytical Psychology. This book was published in 1933 (!) when people only would have thought of a carriage when hearing the word 'coach'.

I was quite amazed when I read a section (page 239ff) that clearly described an important coaching principle:

    Developing Talent & High Performance

    by Trish Meecham

Given the ongoing and increasing competition for talent, organizations and senior executives are more focused than ever on attracting, retaining, developing and engaging the highest levels of human capital.

The challenge is considerable. With the combination of two very real forces - increased demand for skilled employees, coupled with tighter labor markets and shrinking pools of talent - organizations need to find better approaches to achieve sustainable competitive advantage through their people.

Coaching is one such approach, designed to accelerate an individual and/or teams' performance and ultimately impact business results.

    Sustaining Change, Effortlessly: Part One

by Jon Gan of Habit Shift

The joy. The pain. The anticipation and the regret. The attachment and the freedom. Change is all of these and more. Ironically, even though it is required for survival, most of us haven't found cultivating our change-ability an easy task. We struggle with the voice of "If only." "If only the world would slow down. If only other people weren't so-what-human! Then I could manage all the changes."

Don't feel like the odd one out. Join all the rest of us who are struggling with change. Good and bad. Too much or too little. Isn't what we long for is balance? "Sure, I like change. I want change. But, I want it where I want it, when I want it, where I want it, in the way I want it." Right. When does that happen?

Do You Agree with Our Coaching Standards?
By Angela Spaxman, Immediate Past President

After months of development with contributions from dozens of HKCC members, I'm very pleased to present the latest drafts of the HKCC Coaching Standards and the Proposed Complaints Handling Process. Do you live up to these Standards in your coaching practice? Do they describe what you think is the best of coaching? Would this Complaints Handling Process support you as a coach and support HKCC as a community?

These Standards are labelled 'Draft' because we are open to your input. We are keen to build a consensus among our broad range of members to create Standards that truly represent us and policies that support us. Please send me your comments, concerns and suggestions so that we can build on your perspective. We will finalize the Standards on September 15, 2005 and present them to the public in October.
