HKCC Newsletter
April 2005

Dear Coaches,

In my primitive counting, I got a very exciting finding:- our membership constitutes coaches of different nationality or ethnic origin. For sure, HKCC can be regarded as an International Coaching Community. Namely out of a total of 68 coach members, there are 30 members who have a Chinese surname (accounting 44% of the total now.) There is a 20% increase as compared with that recorded a year ago. Well, I would like to introduce Mr. S. K. Shum (one of our Chinese coach members) in this issue.

Please keep your articles, comments and pictures coming in. Don't forget, this is your newsletter, so please keep contributing.

Warm wishes,
Anita Moorjani

SK Shum - Parenting, Relationship and Life Coach

If you asked me 5 years ago what I would become today, I would never thought becoming a life coach and make a living out of it. For me, life coaching seemed like something other people did, either those who were in a dire state, such as career, marriage, relationship crisis or those enlightened souls who have money to pay for someone to listen to their problems.

    What is Coaching?

    By Angela Spaxman

When someone tells you "I'm a coach", have you ever wondered what that means?

Even though I call myself a coach, I still wonder about it when I hear people talk about 'coaching'. Marketers, entrepreneurs, trainers and mothers tell me they are coaches. And I ask myself, what do they mean by saying that? What are they trying to tell me? Companies ask me to provide a 'coaching program', but I can't always be sure that I know what they mean.

I guess we are experiencing a creative surge in the use of the word coach. Many different people are using it, and in lots of different ways. No wonder I'm confused. For my own peace of mind, I would like to be able to understand clearly what people mean when they talk about coaching. I don't like that feeling of suspicion that I get, thinking to myself, "Is she really a Coach?"

    Message from the President

In our daily contacts between our member coaches and the general public (including many local corporations), we noted that the coaching concept sounds very new here as compared with that in America. In USA, a famous band called "Metalica" once hired a coach for 2 years whom had been devoted firstly to resolving the disputes amongst the members and secondly to rebuilding a very harmonious relationship and finally to transforming it into a successful band. The case study was even produced in a DVD for sale and popular among young people. HKCC would like to educate and arouse the general interest towards Coaching: "What is Coaching?" "How can coaching benefit people on different walks of business and lives in HK." However, due to resource constraints to implement the expensive marketing campaign, should you have a cost-effective means to this topic, please contact Bonnie Chan.

    Cheers,
    Bonnie Chan
    President of HKCC
